St. Charles event pairs homeowners with contractors

Chicago Home Show to take place March 17, 18

ST. CHARLES – For those in the need of remodeling a dingy bathroom or upgrading a kitchen to a modern culinary paradise, there is an event to help with that.

The Chicago Home Show, an annual event, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 17 and 18 in the Prairie Events Center at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 535 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. Admission and parking are free.

Featuring about 120 contractors and vendors, the home remodeling show is designed to pair customers with the right professionals.

“This is a show for people who really want to get things done,” said Peggy Ruh, president of The Home Shows, Inc., which produces the St. Charles show and many others across Chicagoland.

Homeowners visiting the show can expect to come away with a solid remodeling plan of action with a professional contractor.

“I call it the ‘don’t do it yourself show’,” Ruh said. “It’s cheaper to do it right.”

From basement waterproofing professionals to skilled roofers, the remodeling show will have contractors on hand ready to tackle any job, Ruh said.

Among customers there tends to be two demographics looking for professional remodeling work, Ruh said.

Oneis first-time homeowners in the 25- to 35-year-old age range, Ruh said.

“These are new homeowners who need help but don’t have the skillset,” Ruh said.

The other is couples who are roughly 45 to 65 years old, often empty-nesters, who are looking to upgrade their surroundings after many years or even get the home ready for sale, Ruh said.

As always, kitchens and bathrooms are prime target areas for home remodeling projects.

Many couples are looking to upgrade their kitchen so they can cook together, Ruh said, and make the kitchen a center for entertaining guests.

Big trends in the industry include kitchen tile that looks like a wood floor, pet-resistant carpeting for other rooms in the home and electro-bonding for bathtubs, Ruh said.

Contractors like Matrix Basement & Luxury Bath or Abbey Tri-State Carpet & Floor will be available to meet homeowners, answer questions and develop a plan, Ruh said.

“The attendees can see if they are comfortable with the tradesmen, and the contractors are able to talk with people who are serious about getting things done,” Ruh said.

Ruh recommends that homeowners bring photographs of the area in the house that needs to be remodeled.

“Take pictures to the show and just start talking to the contractors,” Ruh said.

Contractors like Olive Grove Landscape will be at the show for homeowners looking to get projects done outdoors, while Heinz Greenhouse will be selling plants and flowers, Ruh said.

While there will be every type of contractor available to handle any home improvement need, the size of the show is designed not to overwhelm visitors, Ruh said.

Still, all that contractor-shopping is bound to produce an appetite, and the show will have that covered as well, with a caterer serving pulled-pork sandwiches, burgers, pork chops, soups, muffins and other satisfying fare for sale.
