ELBURN – Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that local band Trillium is booked up for the upcoming St. Patrick's Day week including an Elburn performance.

"It's a busy time of year if you play Celtic music," said Mim Eichmann, a singer and hammered dulcimer and percussion player with the band. "It's kind of like Christmas."

Trillium will perform Celtic music at 1 p.m. March 19 at the Town and Country Public Library, 320 E. North St., Elburn.

She enjoys the fact that Celtic music is so upbeat.

"So much of it, the reels and jigs and horn pipes, are very lively and engaging," Eichmann said. "And there's a lot of fun pub tunes. Some are not very clean, but the ones that we do are all family-friendly. And then there are ballads that are well known like 'Danny Boy' and 'Molly Malone.' People recognize the tunes, or even if they don't recognize them, they tend to enjoy them. As they say, everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day."

Audience members also will have the opportunity to sing along to songs during the show.

"The title track from our last CD is called 'The Rattlin' Bog,' Eichmann said. "And that one is a sing-along. In fact, it's done in pubs and in preschools all over the world. And it is our most popular streamed song off CD Baby. And it's a fun tune. Also, I do it with choreography. So a lot of times people will actually try to get through all the gestures too."

Even before she started playing the hammered dulcimer, Eichmann said she enjoyed the sound of the instrument.

"In my earlier life, I directed a ballet company," she said. "In one of the works I did, the recording I used featured a hammered dulcimer on it. So I sort of look at that as the harbinger of what was to come … I decided that I was going to take lessons, which I did. Actually, I had only been taking lessons for about a year and a half before I started playing out. So I had a lot to learn in a very short period of time."

The band is performing all St. Patrick's Day weekend and has a couple of gigs on St. Patrick's Day, including a wedding in Mt. Prospect.

"They want all Celtic music for that show, and we're looking forward to that one," Eichmann said. "All of this is very fun to do, but it's also very grueling. But it's fun [to perform] and the people are fun and engaging. And I really like all my bandmates, so that's great too."
