St. Charles North High School Student Council earns national recognition

Eighth year school has received recognition

ST. CHARLES – For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that serve to improve the school and community, St. Charles North High School has been recognized as a 2018 National Gold Council of Excellence Award winner by the National Association of Student Councils, a news release stated.

This is the eighth year that St. Charles North High School has received this award in the 10 years that the National Association of Student Councils has been recognizing schools in this manner. St. Charles North’s Student Council is one of only nine schools in the state to receive this distinction this year.

“Receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the highest dedication on the part of the school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” stated Ann Postlewaite, National Association of Secondary School Principals student programs director, in the release. “NatStuCo applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities.”

“This is just a reflection of the hard work North Star Council puts in and I am ecstatic that we were able to receive this award again,” stated Vickie Lopez, St. Charles North Student Council historian and the student responsible for putting together the application and materials for the award, in the release.

To meet the requirements for the National Council of Excellence award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. Councils awarded the gold level have successfully demonstrated the highest levels of leadership.

National Student Councils provides and promotes professional development and leadership training to student council advisers who, in turn, teach leadership skills to student council members. NatStuCo is dedicated to preparing and empowering student leaders to better serve their schools and communities.
