In the third period against Taft's Brendan Gallo (49-5), Benjamin was down 17-6 with the clocking ticking toward zero.
Time was not on his side. It's unusual to see the stud senior in an apparent disadvantage score-wise. Benjamin entered sectionals with a 40-4 record.
Benjamin somehow spun for a reversal and pinned Gallo in a matter of seconds.
"In my head, I'm like: 'Alright, I got the reversal, now it's time to get the pin because that's the only way I'm going to win','" Benjamin said.
The patience paid off, and two lessons were good to learn ahead of Champaign: Full effort on throw attempts and "push through the positions."
"Don't force anything," Benjamin said. "If you know you're going to get it, take it slow if there's enough time and you get the pin."
