To the Editor:
In the next few weeks Congress will vote on a bipartisan bill - House Resolution 8 (HR 8), a widely supported piece of legislation that will require background checks on ALL gun sales, including internet and gun show sales. Currently, a loophole enables people with felony convictions, domestic abusers, and people prohibited from purchasing guns due to mental illness, to buy guns from unlicensed and online dealers without a background check, no questions asked. Under this outdated law, nearly one of four guns purchased are acquired without a background check. The passage of HR 8 will ensure that background checks are made for all sales including online and gun show purchases. Closing this loophole will save lives and make our communities safer.
There is overwhelming support to update the background check system, and support cuts across the political and social divide--including among majorities of both gun owners and Republicans. It is just common sense. Our Congresswoman in the 14th District, Lauren Underwood, along with 228 of her colleagues, has signed on to co-sponsor this important bipartisan bill. I am proud to have a representative who is clear in the conviction that requiring background checks on ALL gun sales is the most effective means of keeping guns out of the wrong hands. Please call Congresswoman Underwood to show your support for taking this long overdue and much needed action.
