ST. CHARLES – Tap House Grill in St. Charles will have its hours reduced for a week next month as a result of a liquor tax violation.

The late night permit allowing Tap House Grill to be open until 2 a.m. will be reduced to a midnight closure from Dec. 1 to Dec. 8, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles. In addition, Tap House Grill, which is located at 3341 W. Main Street, is required to pay a $1,000 fine – $250 of which is due immediately and $750 which is deferred.

Tap House Grill's liquor license is placed on probation until May 31. If there is no violation of the timely alcohol tax remittance requirements under city code during the probationary period, the deferred $750 fine shall be waived, the release stated. If Tap House Grill fails to make timely payments to the city during the probationary period, the deferred $750 fine shall immediately become due, according to the release.

In addition, Tap House Grill shall pay $500 in court costs, the release stated. St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina took the action following a hearing before the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission on Oct. 21. Rogina also serves as the city's liquor commissioner.

According to a memo from St. Charles Finance Director Chris Minick, Tap House Grill has had a repeated history of significantly late payments and appeared before the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission on Feb. 19, when the business was fined $500.

"Since the hearing, Tap House Grill has continued to pay late each month," Minick said in the memo. "Complaints of violation have been served on Tap House Grill for chronic late payment of the alcohol tax liability. The repeated late payments result in considerable staff time and effort to collect the liabilities and the establishments are well aware of their obligations to file the returns and remit payment."
