To the editor:
For those of us with preexisting conditions, it is important not to get caught up in half truths/no truths of leaders who say that they support protections for preexisting conditions while at the same time work to eliminate those very protections.
We have these protections currently under the ACA. Yes, we have the protections for preexisting conditions, and so cannot be denied insurance because of a chronic medical problem. Also children can be covered under their parents' insurance plan until 26. This helps a lot of families with children who have chronic conditions. Additionally, there are no lifetime limits for the cost of health care under the ACA protections.
Yes, there are improvements that need to be made in the ACA; the costs of prescriptions need to be lowered. Congresswoman Lauren Underwood has worked tirelessly for those of us who do have chronic medical conditions and she has worked to lower prescription drug costs. Bills that could be passed on the Senate floor are languishing somewhere within the Senate or on Mitch McConnell’s desk.
Presidential candidates are having a healthy debate about the best way to continue forward on health care, but certainly a way forward is not to eliminate those protections and then claim that you are protecting the very protections you are determined to eliminate! I do not know anyone who does not have a preexisting condition. This is certainly one of the issues that we all need to be focused on and not get sidetracked.
