Police Reports

Forged check costs Batavia bank more than $5K

Fake check was drawn on company in Franklin

BATAVIA – Old Second National Bank, 1991 W. Wilson Street, Batavia, reported Feb. 19 that it cashed a forged check for $5,570.94, according to a police report released after a Freedom of Information Act request.

The check appeared to have been issued by Excel Electric Inc. in Frankfort, the report stated.

The amount of the check had been for $5,627.21, but because there was a $56.27 check cashing fee, the total amount it was cashed for was $5,570.94, the report stated

The check was paid primarily with $100 bills, the report stated.

Bank officials would not comment.

“I don’t believe the bank can provide additional commentary regarding it, in deference to privacy concerns and ongoing law enforcement investigation,” the bank’s general counsel Bob Tirona stated in an email.

A spokesman for Excel Electric Inc. said because of the coronavirus, employees who could answer questions about the forged check were not available.
