Park District Dish: Finding calm in the chaos

As we navigate these difficult times, it can be easy to fall into a slump or feel overly anxious. Maybe you feel less of a work/life balance because your home office is just two steps away from where your kids are playing. Or maybe you wish you could see into the future instead of facing these unpredictable times. Many of us have experienced these feelings the past few weeks. Just because we are staying at home does not mean our lives have to be monotonous or nerve wracking. Let’s find the calm in the chaos!

Recreational opportunities may feel limited right now with facilities and playgrounds closed but they don’t have to be. The Batavia Park District is working hard at providing other options to enhance your social distancing experience.

There is a good chance you haven’t tested out the approximately 400 acres of walking trails or open space within the 40 park sites. Maximize Batavia parks as your outlet for fitness or to mentally reset. Make a list of the locations you want to visit and set aside time in your calendar to enjoy mother nature. Tennis and pickleball courts are now open for singles play only. The Bark Park at West Main Community Park is also open for your furry friend to burn off steam. Dogs are living their best lives right now with their owners being at home more than ever! Fresh air and exercise can do wonders for your mood. Be sure to practice social distancing! A complete list of parks can be found at bataviaparks.org.

Technology can be our best friend in times like these when we are looking for a social connection. Instead of re-watching your favorite series on Netflix, use technology to connect with your friends and family. Set-up weekly calls, virtual happy hours, or virtual game nights to keep a sense of normalcy in your social life. The Park District offers virtual fitness classes as a way to connect with your instructor. Virtual Breakfast Club meetings are also held on Friday mornings for our active adult population.

More time at home can also mean plenty of time for cleaning, reorganizing, and tackling those home improvement projects that have been piling up. When those projects run out, consider taking up a new hobby. Better yet, get the whole family involved! Step inside Batavia’s Virtual Recreation Center at you’ll find the park district has been sharing a variety of at-home activity ideas to get your creative juices flowing. We are also sharing videos of staff’s quarantine hobbies on our Facebook page to give you some inspiration!

Time spent at home with loved ones is perfect for building new memories. Right now, it is not about the trips we take, the museums or zoos we visit, the parties we will host – it is about making memories with the ones we are with that we sometimes take for granted. For some of us, it is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with family that work and school schedules may not always allow. If you are looking for creative ways to spend the time, the Park District has been offering ‘At-Home Adventures’ to spark creativity and encourage quality family time. The At-Home Camping Adventure and Backyard BBQ packages provide families with supplies for each theme day and provide the opportunity to be creative with the space they already have. More ‘At-Home Adventures’ will be coming soon.

Please stay healthy and safe, and find the calm in your chaos!
